The Digital Signage Show offers an in-depth look at how digital signage can improve customer communication and improve the customer experience, while also bringing increased revenue and improved customer experiences for your organization and impact brands and brand sales. From one location to thousands, whether interactive and non-interactive.

KioskCom Self Service Expos deliver strategic, marketing and technical business solutions for organizations utilizing or looking to utilize self-service through interactive digital media. KioskCom Self-Service Expo provides a focused medium on the benefits of using self-service technology and interactive digital media, including kiosks, digital signage, self-checkout and other self-service technologies.

The much anticipated KioskCom Self Service Expo & The Digital Signage Show New York event (15-16 October, 2008), was in session in the heart of New York City. We had a chance to catch up with Lawrence Dvorchik, General Manager of both events to learn more about the latest addition to KioskCom Self Service Expo & The Digital Signage Show Worldwide Event Network. These 2 events are co-located and are held each year in Las Vegas, New York, London and soon to be Tokyo. KioskCom Self Service Expo and The Digital Signage Shows are produced by JD Events under the guidance of Joel Davis and his expert staff.

EKN: "Congratulations on the outstanding success of KioskCom Self Service Expo & The Digital Signage Show New York 2008. We know how hard you and the whole JDE team have been working towards building upon last year’s fantastic event in New York, and ensuring that it serves at a comparable level to the Las Vegas event that has been running for over 10 years. I know your team was looking forward to increased attendance with the pre-show, pre-qualified attendees up 32% over last year. So, from you point of view, what was new for 2008?"
Lawrence: "The shows continued to demonstrate why customer facing technologies are a true benefit to organizations and their customers (whether it be consumers, employees, students or the like)."

Lawrence Dvorchik, General Manager, KioskCom 's Self Service Expo   "The applications demonstrated were able to show organizations a full solution for their current issues. By integrating several different customer facing technologies, or by staring with one and planning for the scalability into others, organizations understand the opportunity to improve their customer communications and experience, and the positive impact it can have on their customers. The exhibitors continue to display new, exciting and engaging solutions that organizations can implement quickly and with a high degree of success."

"Our educational sessions continue to push the leading edge issues, and reflect the experience of the end-user Board of Advisors. The entire Board of Advisors really takes great pride in developing the best content, recruiting the best speakers, and ensuring a consistent, quality educational program for each and every attendee."

EKN: "So if the overall show floor grew 50%, how many new exhibitors were there and what was the attendee growth for 2008?"
Lawrence: "The exhibit floor was slightly over 50% larger than the NY show in 2007. The pre-qualified and verified attendance of buyers grew by 35%, to 1,727 pure buyers.

In a good economy, this is considered impressive growth. With the global economic issues we all face, to grow at that level simply demonstrates the value of what is received by the attendees and exhibitors alike."

EKN: "While Digital Signage is still new and emerging in many ways, it is clear that all types of new applications are coming forward. What are you views on Digital signage and where we can expect to see new technologies this year?"
Lawrence: "As I enter my 14th year of promoting the benefits of deploying self-service kiosks and now digital signage, the phrase “the more things change, the more they stay the same” continues to resonate in my mind.

While the technologies and functions for each deployment continue to change and reach into new markets, there is a base component that remains the same – building from the past. Regardless of where your program is set to launch or who your target is, researching and understanding the past successes and failures of the customer-facing technology (CFT) programs that preceded the new application continues to play a primary role in the deployment process.

Having been involved with many of these deployments from both the buyer’s side and seller’s side, it is very apparent that those who had a well-conceived strategy based on analyzing previous successes and failures experienced greater results than those who attempted to start from scratch. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to create a new direction or concept for your deployment, the core belief that a clear understanding of customer and employee behavior and trends serves as major strategic asset to ensuring your success the first time out, still holds true just as much today as it did 10 years ago.

Self-service and kiosk deployments studied preceding CFT initiatives – from ATMs to the Internet to early kiosks – as part of their development process. I believe that the Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) signage industry stands to gain significantly by following suit and learning from the trials and tribulations encountered by the kiosk and self-service industry.

For 13 years I’ve been involved at all levels of the Customer-Facing Technology industry, dealing in everything from kiosks to websites to handhelds to digital signage. I’ve worked with thousands of deployers and purchasers, and just as many technology and service providers. I have conducted extensive research and industry analysis, and even demonstrated the benefits of these customer-facing technologies to professionals serving arenas in the mainstream universe, such as retail, hotels, travel, government, food service, etc.

My work has brought a number of “hot button” Digital Signage/DOOH issues to my attention, including:
  • Securing funding and appropriate technology for the project
  • Gaining complete organizational support, from Senior / Executive level buy-off to employee acceptance
  • Improving the customer experience
  • Creating relevant and engaging content, and ensuring your content is presented in the right context
  • Providing ROI metrics to purchasers and advertisers
  • Increasing revenues with the deployment while reducing operational expenses
I can say with full confidence that these same issues have been brought up within the kiosk industry as well. The only difference is that the kiosk market has discussed and analyzed these issues in great detail, and gone on to implement successful action plans to remedy the problems. More importantly, the research and results are now used as the platform for many DOOH deployments.

Kiosks and digital signage share an incredible amount of analogous DNA, and are often deployed simultaneously. Organizations that embrace learning from the histories and actions have proven this point with their successes, and they have loudly proclaimed that events which encourage strategic discussions around multiple CFT deployments and promote interaction, analysis and knowledge-sharing have significantly helped them to quickly and efficiently launch and succeed with their CFT projects. "

EKN: "I know that you also offer attendees several different experiences and methods for the educational portion of the show. Can you tell us a little bit about those sessions?"
Lawrence: "Our sessions were highlighted by the tremendous Keynote Presentations by Jared Miller of Continental Airlines, Amit Dongerdive of the Georgia Aquarium (the world’s largest aquarium) and the United States Postal Service. These leaders shared their visions and execution strategies for integrating all customer facing technologies into their organizations. The diversity of these speakers continues to show just how far-reaching and broad based the use of customer facing technology can be.

By continuing out long-standing focus on the vital elements for organizations to successfully deploy customer facing technologies, we are able to speed up their learning curve to ensure success the first time out of the gate.
