A Q & A with Mr. Carlo Stradi, President & CEO
of Custom Engineering!

25 August, 2008 - EKN is pleased with the many relationships we foster with companies around the World. We have had a special business relationship with Custom Engineering. Perhaps it is because Mr. Carlo Stradi has established an international business while he has maintained the World Headquarters in Parma Italy.

This provides a blend of sophistication and approachability rarely found, but greatly appreciated. It is not just Carlo and his demeanor and candor. It is all of the people involved in making the Custom Vision a reality. We have worked for many years with Sara Aliani, Customs Marketing Manager, whose professionalism is consistent, articulate, and upbeat.

One common thread can be found running through the entire organization and that is the knowledge about their products. Custom printers are used in the industrial sector, retail stores, gaming market and for all applications for Kiosks and ATM’s. Their kiosk printers are the perfect match for public service allocations, like tickets for travel, parking, banking and cinema/theatre seats, maps, site layout in retail stores, petrol stations, airports and places with high consumer flow.

We recently had an opportunity to sit down with Carlo and his business associate Mr. Handoko Budidharma in Shanghai China. Here are some of the topics we spoke about as we learned more about the latest developments at Custom Engineering!

  EKN: "Mr. Stradi, thank you for taking some of your valuable time to provide an update for our readers about the development going on over the past several years at Custom. We appreciate that Custom provides a wide range of products used in Self-Service Applications. This includes Printers, Magnetic Card Readers / Writers, POS Equipment, Digital Signage Hardware, Coin Mechanisms, Power Supplies and more. It appears that your growth has been substantial over the last couple of years. How have you managed this growth?"  
  Carlo: "Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity, Robert. Yes, in the last 10 years Custom has grown more than 20% per year! As you said, in the last years we had a substantial growth which put us in the condition to strengthen our structure and organization. In order to stay closer to customers and meet their needs, we now have established four different vertical market segments: OEM, POS, TKT and GLB.

After we identified the increasing amount of products and challenges in each segment, we created a new identity, the Custom Group Holding Company. This holding includes Custom Engineering Spa and our partners Custom Production Europe, System Retail and System Gaming and now a new acquisition: Fasy International. In this way, we can keep separate our different business identities and be sure that each product and customer is properly followed through the Sales Process to ensure Quality. Today the group is still a privately held stock company with a share per capital of 6,0Ml/€. We are quite aware that our 'people' are what has allowed us to grow and prosper. We now have a staff of over of 300 people."
 
  EKN: "Please describe your customer base and one of your favorite projects?"
Carlo: "Our core businesses are:
  • Kiosk Equipment (printers and scanners device)
  • Point of Sale Products (cash register, printers and terminals)
  • Solution for Lottery and Betting Markets
  • Ticketing (meaning special devices for boarding passes for railways tickets and receipts)
We are now developing the Digital Multimedia Division and we are launching a new product, "Miniplayer". To find out more about this product, go to: Custom's Mini Player. This device provides you with the ability to manage all multimedia content. You can monitor remotely, so it can be used in a wide range of contexts. I think the Digital Signage Market offers great possibility and we are determined to explore all of them with our solutions for the digital communication. In fact, we will be able to reach with a single product various typologies of customers: chains of shops, supermarkets, betting outlets, public transports, cinemas, travel, and real estate agencies and so on."


EKN: "Carlo, would you tell us about your perspective of doing business in Asia and in particular, China?"
Carlo: "Asia and China in particular, is the biggest market in the world and the place we must be now for future growth. These are huge countries with great opportunities of business and seen the difficult European situation we have to enlarge our business relationships with new horizons. These countries have different traditions and cultural roots.

This is true also for the business field; the way of drawing up contracts, to handle business transitions is not the same so we have to adapt and to study the best way to introduce ourselves in these areas. It’s a big opportunity not to underestimate, even if it’s also a risky market and a lot of companies in the West are prejudiced against the Chinese world of business. I think it’s important to have local partners and local presence to proceed in the best way for doing a business relationship. This is the case of Custom group and Hanindo Group."


EKN: "Thank you Carlo, your insights are fascinating and most helpful for our readers. Can you tell us more about some of your partnering efforts, and how you established the relationship with The Hanindo Group?"
Carlo: "Over time we have created a relationship based on trust and a very good feeling. I would like to thank our area manager, Mr. Lusetti, who created and developed this business opportunity in the local market (Indonesia and China). It has been one year that we carry on this good relationship, with frequent travels to China and, from their side, to Italy. These travels were important to learn about each other and the differences in our cultures. It has allowed us to build trust.

We also have done some exhibitions together. We had two successful shows this summer in Beijing and Shanghai and have more planned. This is an important growth potential market and we want to strengthen this relationship in the future, with the project to add them as Custom partner in the Indonesian and then Chinese market. "
