PRESS RELEASE
Rafi...Interactive Kiosks need Rugged Keyboards!
1 April, 2002 -
The latest generation of ‘public access’ kiosk keyboards has been introduced by Rafi GB
Limited, of the United Kingdom.
WHATEVER THE STYLE, INTERACTIVE KIOSKS NEED RUGGED KEYBOARDS
|
The greater reliability and ease of use of the internet plus the public’s increasing
familiarity with the technology is leading to a rapid expansion in the installation of
public access kiosks.
Because of the vast amount of information and services available,
the traditional touch screen most commonly associated with these kiosks has proved too
limiting.
Consequently a keyboard and pointing device specifically designed for the task
was required, robust enough to withstand public use but easy and natural to operate.
|
By removing all unnecessary keys, adding browser-specific ones and slightly reducing the
size of the keyblock, Rafi (GB) has produced a suitably compact device that retains the
familiar layout of conventional keyboards. to reduce time spent navigating the web
‘speed keys’ have been incorporated for common inputs such as www, co.uk, com etc. plus
a browser mouse button has been added to the trackerball to facilitate easy scrolling
of viewed pages.
The keyboard utilises an individual switch system with high impact ABS keycaps held behind
a steel front plate and protected by their own built-in shock absorbers. The 38mm diameter
trackerball uses stainless steel components with high grade plastics and optical encoders
to provide IP65 sealing protection when stationary.
NEW INTERGRAL TRACKERBALL FOR SEALED KEYBOARD
Rafi (GB) Ltd. has produced a new version of its IP65 standard sealed overlay
keyboard incorporating a new series of integral trackerball. This rugged application
is resistant to dirt, dust and splashing water and is ideal for any application where
contamination could occur but a standard mouse would be vulnerable to failure.
|
|
Rafi has integrated a new trackerball into the keyboard from The Trackerball Company, manufactured
from precision stainless steel components, high grade injection moulded plastics and
enhanced optical encoders. Sealing is provided by a full floating, self lubricating PTFE
seal achieving a sealing level to IP65 (NEMA 6) when static. Chemical resistance and
life expectancy is also claimed to be superior.
The keyboard is available as a housed or panel mounted unit and features the established
RF15 gold contact switches covered by a reverse printed polyester embossed overlay. The
housed version fits comfortably into a 19” 1U high rack drawer. Windows keys are provided
but these can be easily disabled via internal DIP switches.
